Periodontal (gum) diseases are caused by bacteria which destroys the supporting structures of your teeth. Most periodontal conditions will respond favorably to traditional methods of periodontal therapy, such as scaling, root planing, surgery and periodic professional cleanings. Unfortunately, a small percentage of periodontal patients do not respond to this conventional mechanical therapy in spite of the best efforts of both the dental professional and the patient. This can be very frustrating for everyone involved. However, we now have microbial testing available to detect and monitor the bacteria which are associated with non-responsive periodontal diseases. The microbial test results help determine which therapeutic approach is the most appropriate and if antibiotics or antimicrobial agents are needed to treat your specific condition.
